WEATHER WARS (working title) / delivery June 2012 / 52' / HD /
Directed by Bigert and Bergström, Produced by Hysteria Film
Weather Wars is a film about the conflict between mankind and the weather. A fight that is escalating as global temperatures rise. The idea of controlling the weather is as old as humanity itself. Throughout history, humans have developed countless methods to predict shifts in weather. But in recent years these activities have intensified and developed into weather modification, as human impact on the global climate has become increasingly evident.
The characters we meet in the film can be seen as representatives of various stereotypes from war movies. There are people who develop weapons or defences against the elements, people who find themselves in the middle of a conflict and peace activists who try to mediate between the warring factions.
Visually, the film centres on a black point, a dot, full stop – the end of a sentence, the beginning of an action, an ominous symbol. Like a grenade with the pin removed or a black hole, this symbol becomes the sharp illustration of our uncertainty about the future and the threat that this uncertainty results in. Its circular shape recurs as a theme in the film’s interviews and diagrams showing everything from hurricane formations to satellite images of the Earth. The point rolls across the screen to ‘wipe’ it clean in a scene change. We will occasionally descend into the sphere, which is also a physical globe inside which someone struggles against various climatological extremes.
The purpose of the film is to look at past and present scientific climate solutions. New scientific ideas are often seen as truths, and in some cases, policy decisions are based on them, which heavily impact people’s everyday lives. A decade later, these ideas are replaced with new ‘truths’. Today the world is seeing new scientific solutions to climate change that will have a significant impact on people’s lives. These are the thoughts, framed with poetic subtlety, that we want the audience to leave the cinema with, when the last of the popcorn is gone and the lights have gone up.
