HITCHING WITH RUTHER / delivery March 2012 / 52' / SD /
Directed by Pierre Peyrot & Gerhard Jören
“ The last time I shot someone was 3 years ago. Killing is bad habit, and you get used to it. But today I won’t go out of my way to kill a criminal. I don’t do that anymore. Now I just pretend to be strong.” - Ruther Batuigas
Hitching with Ruther is a gripping ride from the halls of power to the criminal underbelly of Asia’s most corrupt country, second only to Iraq for the number of journalists murdered in the line of duty. A celebrated investigative reporter and radio commentator, and occasional vigilante, Ruther Batuigas guides us through this personal, brazen and unexpected portrait of the Philippines.
This feature documentary was shot between December 2008 and March 2011. Given the extraordinary access and friendship Gerhard Jören has with Ruther Batuigas, whom he has known for over 15 years now, we follow him in his work, meet presidents past and present, the criminal underbelly of the Phillipines, and will be guided by him on his often unorthodox pursuit of equal justice for all.
Controversial, shocking and sure to inspire fierce debate, Hitching with Ruther uncovers a world very rarely seen by Western eyes.
